Submission Requirements
Paper Checklist
All submissions to ICWSM 2026 must include a completed paper checklist that describes the potential broader impact of their work and ethical considerations. This checklist-based approach provides a balanced perspective and helps ensure that research meets ethical standards, addresses methodological rigor, and considers potential societal impacts.
Requirements
- The paper checklist must be completed for all submission types
- The completed checklist must be unaltered (i.e., no questions removed)
- The checklist should be included as the first section after the references in your submission, but before any appendices
- Authors may supplement the checklist with a brief discussion that expands on answers where necessary
- The checklist and any supplemental discussion do not count towards the page limit
- Papers without a completed checklist will be desk-rejected
Purpose
The checklist ensures that all papers communicate the known or anticipated consequences of research through a standardized format. This approach draws on feedback from the ICWSM community and follows best practices established by other leading conferences.
Templates
Use one of the following templates to complete the paper checklist:
Anonymity
ICWSM 2026 follows a double-blind review process, unless stated otherwise. Authors must anonymize their submissions to ensure fair and unbiased evaluation of the research on its own merits.
Anonymization Requirements
- Author Information: Do not include author names or affiliations at the start of the paper
- Acknowledgments: Do not include funding or other acknowledgments in papers submitted for review
- Self-Citations: References to your own prior relevant work can be included, but should not specify that this is your own work
- Body Text: It is up to your discretion how much to further modify the body of the paper to preserve anonymity
Exemptions
The following submission types are exempt from double-blind anonymization requirements, and instead follow single-blind anonymization:
- Demo Papers: Often contain system URLs that would reveal author identity
- Dataset Papers: Often contain URLs to data sharing services that would reveal author identity
Additional Notes
- The anonymity requirement does not extend outside the review process (e.g., you can distribute your papers on the Web). Even when a reviewer knows an author's identity, the double-blind process should serve as a reminder to evaluate work on its own merits
Authorship Policy
ICWSM 2026 will adopt ACM's new policy on authorship as it relates to the use of AI tools. Key requirements include:
Key Requirements
- Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors of submitted papers
- Full disclosure required: Any use of generative AI tools must be disclosed in the Acknowledgements section
- When in doubt, disclose: If uncertain about disclosure requirements, err on the side of caution
What Requires Disclosure
Generative AI use for text, tables, graphs, code, data, citations, or any other content creation.
What Does NOT Require Disclosure
Basic word processing (spell/grammar check), language translation tools, and standard reference management software.
How to Disclose
Location: Include AI disclosure in the Acknowledgements section of your paper.
Example: "ChatGPT [or other specific tool name] was utilized to generate sections of this work, including [specify areas: text, tables, graphs, code, data, citations, etc.]."
For complete details, refer to the full ACM authorship policy.
Duplicate Submissions
ICWSM 2026 will not accept any paper that, at the time of submission, is under review for or has already been published or accepted for publication in a journal or conference.
Policy Details
- This restriction does not apply to submissions for non-archival workshops
- This restriction does not apply to the Social Science and Sociophysics Track, as papers in this track are not published in the archival proceedings
Consequences of Duplicate Submissions
If duplicate submissions are identified during the review process:
- All submissions from that author will be disqualified from the current ICWSM conference
- Authors will not be permitted to submit papers to the ICWSM conference in the following year
Resubmission
ICWSM Resubmission Policy
Authors of rejected papers from ICWSM may revise and submit their revised papers after 6 months from the date of the last decision, but not before.
Timeline Examples
- January round submissions: Can be resubmitted to the September round (6 months after March decision) but not the May round
- May round submissions: Can be resubmitted to the January round of the following year (6 months after July decision) but not the September round
- September round submissions: Can be resubmitted to the May round of the following year (6 months after November decision) but not the January round
Important Notes
- This policy was implemented to avoid paper rejections due to lack of time for revisions and to discourage submission of papers that are not ready
- This 6-month limit applies only to rejected full papers, and not to rejected demo, poster, or dataset papers
Previous Rejections
If a previous version of your submission was rejected at any peer-reviewed venue, you must provide:
- A summary of the changes made in the current version
- The original reviews

Review Process
Review Process
ICWSM employs a rigorous peer review process to ensure the highest quality of accepted papers. Different submission types follow different review processes as outlined below.
Full Papers Review Process
Review System
Full papers undergo a comprehensive double-blind peer review process with thorough evaluation by domain experts. This multi-stage process ensures the highest standards for research contributions.
Review Outcomes
Full papers can receive one of three outcomes after review:
- Accept: Paper is accepted for publication
- Revise and Resubmit (R&R): Paper shows promise but requires revisions (see Revisions section)
- Reject: Paper is not accepted
Post-Review Process
Authors who receive an "Accept" recommendation will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer suggestions by making minor edits when preparing the camera-ready version. Authors who receive a "Revise and Resubmit" recommendation will have the opportunity to address reviewer suggestions and resubmit an improved manuscript in the next submission deadline. See the Revisions section for detailed requirements.
Revision and Resubmission Policy
- R&R papers can be resubmitted to the next available submission round (see Revisions section for requirements)
- Rejected papers must wait 6 months before resubmission (see Resubmission Policy)
- Rejected papers cannot be resubmitted to the immediate next round
- Authors must declare any previous rejections when resubmitting
Other Submission Types Review Process
Review System
Poster papers, demo papers, dataset papers, workshops, and tutorials undergo a streamlined review process focused on relevance, quality, and contribution to the ICWSM community.
Review Outcomes
Other submission types receive a binary decision and will either be accepted or rejected. There is no revise and resubmit option for these submission types.
Post-Review Process
Authors of accepted submissions will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer suggestions by making minor edits when preparing the camera-ready version.
Revisions
Papers that were previously submitted to ICWSM and received a "Revise and Resubmit" decision should be accompanied by a copy of the previous reviews and an author response statement.
Response Statement Requirements
The response statement may be in any format, but many reviewers appreciate a response that begins with an overall summary followed by a detailed response to each reviewer concern.
A helpful detailed response typically includes:
- Each point raised by the reviewers
-
Your response to each point, which may:
- Explain why no changes were made, or
- Describe the changes made and direct the reviewer to the specific page, section, or figure where the revised content appears
Review Process for Revisions
At the discretion of the Senior PC member handling the paper, the revised version may be sent back to some or all of the original reviewers for comment and evaluation, and may also be sent to additional reviewers.
After Acceptance

ICWSM/JQD Global Initiative (IJGI)
ICWSM and the Journal of Quantitative Description: Digital Media (JQD) invite applications for the ICWSM/JQD Global Initiative (IJGI). Despite the global nature of the problems studied by ICWSM and JQD, both communities historically receive few submissions from researchers in the Global South. IJGI aims to address this gap by supporting researchers currently based at institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) whose work fits within the ICWSM and JQD scope.
Selected applicants will be paired with senior ICWSM or JQD community members who will mentor them in developing a competitive paper. Submissions will go through the standard review processes of ICWSM or JQD, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Regardless of outcome, participants will receive sustained mentorship, strengthen their research, and build lasting connections with the ICWSM and JQD communities.
The program runs for nine months starting in February 2026. Participants will take part in monthly group meetings, periodic progress reports, and a virtual work-in-progress presentation at ICWSM 2026 in June. The program concludes with a submission to ICWSM or JQD in September 2026.
Researchers who complete the program and submit a paper will be eligible for financial support to attend ICWSM 2027 (location TBD in Europe), regardless of whether their paper is accepted. We expect to select 4–6 participants, each eligible for up to $3,000 in travel and related expenses.
How to Apply
Submit a proposal here (max two pages, excluding citations) describing a project that can reasonably be completed and written up as a full paper—targeting ICWSM or JQD—by the September 2026 deadline. Projects already underway or with preliminary results are preferred. Proposals will be evaluated primarily on feasibility.
Proposals must be relevant to the ICWSM or JQD audience and fall within the scope of their respective calls for papers.
- If targeting JQD, use the JQD LOI format
- If targeting ICWSM, use the AAAI format (LaTeX or Word)
- Include a CV for each team member
Important Dates
-
Applications due:
January 15January 23, 2026, 23:59 (AoE) - Notifications:
February 1February 7, 2026 -
Mentoring Program Begins:
February 15February 23, 2026
Eligibility
IJGI aims to introduce new members from underserved communities to ICWSM and JQD. Applicants should be new to both communities (no prior ICWSM attendance and no prior JQD publications).
IJGI is open to researchers at all career stages. Applicants must be affiliated with a public or private higher-education institution or a non-profit organization whose primary mission is research or science education.
Because financial barriers limit participation, travel support is intended primarily for researchers with substantial financial need. Priority will be given to applicants based at institutions in LMICs (see http://oe.cd/dac-list-oda-recipients), though applicants from other underserved communities may also be considered. Completion of the mentorship program is required to receive travel funding.

- If submitting a letter of support, you will not need all of the above information about the nominee, and will just be asked to upload the letter of support itself
Narrative of contributions
The selection committee will contact all nominated individuals and suggest that they submit a two-page narrative of their research contributions. This is extremely valuable to the committee, so that it can better compare self-nominated researchers with the ones nominated by colleagues or mentors.Selection Criteria and Process
The selection is based on the impact of the candidate's work in the field: in identifying significant new problems, creating promising new ideas, paradigms, and tools related to data-driven understanding of human behavior, which may be quantitative or qualitative in nature. Depth and impact are valued over breadth of contribution for this award. A strong regard for considering the ethical aspects of the data/methods used in social computing/computational social science is expected of the research record of the nominees.
Conflict of interest
The awards committee takes conflict of interest seriously. If a nominated individual is a former or current collaborator of one or more of the committee members, such member(s) recuse themselves from evaluating and voting on these nominations or are replaced by other appointees.
