Hoping Evan's reading this for questions we didn't get to...

It may be a slippery slope, but have you considered adding a sort of metadata field? With no constraining structure, this could let the community experiment with such things as images, geotags, and URL change notifications without "cluttering" the message space. This could be analogous to the unintended uses of delicious's tag field.

Also, you acknowledged that location is likely to become a formal component of Twitter as usage reaches critical mass. I'd like to suggest rather an "official mashup" integration with one of the existing tools like plazes.

Kathy Sierra's post on Twitter is getting a lot of buzz, at least according to BlogPulse. I consider it the Twitter contrarian view. I have written about Evan's talk here, and on the first bit of Kathy's post here.
