Datasets

Every year ICWSM strives to facilitate better and broader use of datasets in social media research. This year, ICWSM is continuing to advance the dataset sharing initiative that was successfully launched last year. In 2012, a total of 14 new and novel datasets were published through the newly-launched data sharing initiative. This year, we will be, again, inviting all authors of papers and posters accepted into ICWSM 2013 to submit and share the datasets on which their work is based. As was done last year, we will be recognizing the most outstanding dataset contributed with a Dataset Prize.

The process for submitting a dataset for inclusion in this year's data sharing program will begin after acceptance decisions have been made on submitted papers. All contact authors will receive an invitation to share their dataset. While participation is voluntary, authors who opt out are expected to complete a short and anonymous survey explaining their reasons for not sharing their dataset. While contributed datasets are certainly the goal of this program, we consider responses to the opt-out survey crucial to better understanding the obstacles that keep some datasets from being shared.

Participating authors will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare and submit their datasets. Furthermore, members of the ICWSM Data Committee will work with any interested authors in evaluating Terms of Usage and other legal or logistical matters that might influence their ability to share their dataset.
