Submit
ICWSM 2027 follows a multi-round submission process with three submission deadlines throughout the year. All deadlines are 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth). Full papers can be submitted in any round but poster, demo and dataset papers and workshop and tutorial proposals can only be submitted in the January 2027 round. Please refer to the individual submission type sections below for specific deadline requirements.

- Rejections from May 2026
Important note: To be presented at ICWSM 2027, a paper must be accepted during either the May 2026, September 2026 or January 2027 round. This means that papers receiving an R&R in January 2027 will not be presented at ICWSM 2027, but have a chance of being presented at ICWSM 2028. Only a minority of papers are accepted without R&R though, so submitting in the May 2026 and September 2026 rounds provides the best chance of presenting at ICWSM 2027.
Submission process
Follow these steps to submit a paper to ICWSM:
- Prepare your manuscript according to the requirements set out in the Submission Requirements section
- Open the Precision Conference System (PCS) submission portal
- After registering and logging in, navigate to the "Submissions" tab and select:
- Society: AAAI
- Conference/Journal: ICWSM 2027
- Track: Select the appropriate track for your submission
- If AAAI or ICWSM cannot be selected in the dropdown options, the submission system is not yet open
- Click "Go" to create a placeholder submission, then click "Edit Submission" to add your paper details
Your submission will be marked complete once all required fields are filled, but you can continue editing until the deadline. Note that workshop and tutorial proposals are submitted via email, not through PCS
Full papers
Full papers are the primary contribution type at ICWSM, representing significant original research in web and social media science.
- Page Limit:
- Initial submission: Up to 11 pages (8 recommended)
- R&R: Up to 12 pages
- Camera-ready: Up to 12 pages
- Review Type: Double-blind peer review (see anonymity for more details)
- Format: AAAI two-column format (Overleaf template or AAAI Author Kit)
- Revisions: One revise and resubmit option available
- Submission Deadline: Full papers can be submitted to any of the three submission rounds.
- Publication: Accepted full papers are published in the official ICWSM proceedings.
Content Guidelines
- Page limits are inclusive of references (i.e., references count toward the total page limit)
- The mandatory paper checklist should be included after the references section and before any appendices
- Appendices are optional. Reviewers are not required to evaluate appendices, and excessively long appendices may result in rejection.
- The paper checklist, and optional appendices do not count towards the page limit
Social Science and Sociophysics Track
ICWSM continues the 'social science and sociophysics' track following its successful debut in 2013. This option is for researchers in social science and sociophysics who wish to submit works without publication in the conference proceedings.
- Quality Standards: Papers in this track must describe the same high-quality and complete work as main track submissions
- Submission Requirements: All submission requirements match those for Full Papers, including page limits, format, anonymization, deadlines, and the mandatory paper checklist.
- Review Process: Submissions are reviewed through the same reviewing process as full papers
- Presentation: Accepted papers will be presented either as full-length or poster presentations integrated with the conference
- Publication: While papers are not published in the proceedings, abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings
Important Notes
- This track allows submission of work that may be published elsewhere, as papers are not included in the archival proceedings
- When submitting through PCS, select the Social Science and Sociophysics Track option
Submission requirements
Formatting
All submissions to ICWSM 2027 must follow the following formatting requirements:
- Use the AAAI two-column format for US Letter (8.5" x 11") paper: see Overleaf template or AAAI Author Kit
- Be submitted as high-resolution PDFs
- Be in English
- The copyright slug may be omitted in the initial submission phase, and no copyright form is required until a paper is accepted for publication
Additionally, please see individual sections for specific requirements for each submission type
Paper Checklist
All submissions to ICWSM 2027 must include a completed paper checklist that describes the potential broader impact of their work and ethical considerations. This checklist-based approach provides a balanced perspective and helps ensure that research meets ethical standards, addresses methodological rigor, and considers potential societal impacts. The checklist ensures that all papers communicate the known or anticipated consequences of research through a standardized format. This approach draws on feedback from the ICWSM community and follows best practices established by other leading conferences.
- The paper checklist must be completed for all submission types
- The completed checklist must be unaltered (i.e., no questions removed)
- The checklist should be included as the first section after the references in your submission, but before any appendices
- Authors may supplement the checklist with a brief discussion that expands on answers where necessary
- The checklist and any supplemental discussion do not count towards the page limit
- Papers without a completed checklist will be desk-rejected
- Use one of the following templates to complete the paper checklist: Overleaf template or PDF template
Anonymity
ICWSM 2027 follows a double-blind review process, unless stated otherwise. Authors must anonymize their submissions to ensure fair and unbiased evaluation of the research on its own merits. The anonymity requirement does not extend outside the review process (e.g., you can distribute your papers on the Web). Even when a reviewer knows an author's identity, the double-blind process should serve as a reminder to evaluate work on its own merits.
Anonymization Requirements
- Author Information: Do not include author names or affiliations at the start of the paper
- Acknowledgments: Do not include funding or other acknowledgments in papers submitted for review
- Self-Citations: References to your own prior relevant work can be included, but should not specify that this is your own work
- Body of the text: It is up to your discretion how much to further modify the body of the paper to preserve anonymity
The following submission types are exempt from double-blind anonymization requirements, and instead follow single-blind anonymization:
- Demo Papers: Often contain system URLs that would reveal author identity
- Dataset Papers: Often contain URLs to data sharing services that would reveal author identity
Generative AI Disclosure
ICWSM 2027 will adopt ACM's new policy on authorship as it relates to the use of AI tools. Key requirements include:
- Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors of submitted papers
- Any use of generative AI tools must be disclosed in the Acknowledgements section. For instance, "ChatGPT [or other specific tool name] was used to generate sections of this work, including [specify areas: text, tables, graphs, code, data, citations, etc.]."
- Requires disclosure: Generative AI use for text, tables, graphs, code, data, citations, or any other content creation.
- Does NOT require disclosure: Basic word processing (spell/grammar check), language translation tools, and standard reference management software
- When in doubt, disclose
For more details, refer to the full ACM authorship policy.
Duplicate Submissions
ICWSM 2027 will not accept any paper that, at the time of submission, is under review for or has already been published or accepted for publication in a journal or conference. This restriction does not apply to submissions to:
- non-archival workshops
- the Social Science and Sociophysics Track
If duplicate submissions are identified during the review process, all submissions from that author will be disqualified from the current ICWSM conference and authors will not be permitted to submit papers to the ICWSM conference in the following year
Resubmitting after R&R
Papers that were previously submitted to ICWSM and received a "Revise and Resubmit" decision should be accompanied by a copy of the previous reviews and an author response statement. The response statement may be in any format, but many reviewers appreciate a response that begins with an overall summary followed by a detailed response to each reviewer concern.
A helpful detailed response typically includes:
- Each point raised by the reviewers
- Your response to each point, which may:
- Explain why no changes were made, or
- Describe the changes made and direct the reviewer to the specific page, section, or figure where the revised content appears
At the discretion of the Senior PC member handling the paper, the revised version may be sent back to some or all of the original reviewers for comment and evaluation, and may also be sent to additional reviewers.
Resubmitting rejected papers
Authors of rejected papers from ICWSM may revise and submit their revised papers after 6 months from the date of the last decision, but not before. This policy was implemented to avoid paper rejections due to lack of time for revisions and to discourage submission of papers that are not ready. This 6-month limit applies only to rejected full papers, and not to rejected demo, poster, or dataset papers.
Timeline examples
- Paper rejected during January 2026 round: Can be resubmitted in September 2026 for ICWSM 2027
- Paper rejected during May 2026 round: Can be resubmitted in January 2027 for ICWSM 2027
- Paper rejected during September 2026 round: Can be resubmitted in May 2027 for ICWSM 2028
If a previous version of your submission was rejected at any peer-reviewed venue, you must provide the following during the submission process in the PCS portal:
- A summary of the changes made in the current version
- The original reviews
Review process
ICWSM employs a rigorous peer review process to ensure the highest quality of accepted papers. Different submission types follow different review processes as outlined below.
Full papers
Full papers undergo a comprehensive double-blind peer review process with thorough evaluation by domain experts. This multi-stage process ensures the highest standards for research contributions. Full papers can receive one of three outcomes after review:
- Accept: The paper is accepted for publication and authors will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer suggestions by making minor edits when preparing the camera-ready version.
- Revise and Resubmit (R&R): The paper shows promise but requires more substantial revisions. Authors will have the opportunity to address reviewer suggestions and resubmit an improved manuscript in the next submission deadline.
- Reject: The paper is not accepted and cannot be resubmitted to the immediate next round, but may be resubmitted the round after that.
Other submission types
Poster, demo and dataset papers, as well as workshop and tutorial proposals, undergo a streamlined review process focused on relevance, quality, and contribution to the ICWSM community. These other submission types receive a binary decision and will either be accepted or rejected. There is no revise and resubmit option. Authors of accepted submissions will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer suggestions by making minor edits when preparing the camera-ready version.
After acceptance
Disclosures
Authors are required to provide explicit disclosure of funding and competing interests that could result in conflicts of interest. This disclosure should be included in the camera-ready version of accepted papers, but not in the version submitted for review to maintain author anonymity. These disclosures must be included in the Acknowledgments section of your camera-ready paper (for accepted papers only).
- Funding: All financial activities supporting the submitted work, including grants, contracts, and other funding sources
- Competing Interests: Related financial activities outside the submitted work that could create conflicts of interest
Code of Conduct
Authors are required to read the AAAI Code of Conduct and Ethics Guidelines. Submitting to ICWSM implies that authors agree to abide by these rules.
Conference Registration
Authors will be contacted about how to register for the conference if their work is accepted. For general registration information and updates, please see the Attend page.
Publication
All accepted papers (full papers, dataset papers, poster papers, demo papers) will be published in the official ICWSM conference proceedings, with the following exceptions:
- Workshops will be published in the separate ICWSM workshop proceedings. Papers that are accepted by a workshop are given the option to include their submission in the workshop proceedings.
- Tutorials are not published in any proceedings
Authors will be required to transfer copyright to AAAI.
